Ultimate

Today (where "today" means Sunday the 20th, technically the day before I wrote most of this since it was after midnight, and not meaning the 25th, the day I technically published it) I played Ultimate barefoot, in the rain. It's the only time I've done that, I think. I'm pretty sure I've only played Ultimate in the rain one other time, and that was before I started playing barefoot (since then I've been enlightened). There were a lot of people there this time, and it was the most fun I've had in a while, I think. When I played Friday there were puddles and wind, but no rain. Nonetheless, the threat of rain seemed to have scared off most people, so we didn't actually have enough people for a game, just enough to toss the frisbee a bit. This made me start to wonder nostaligically what happend to the good ol' days of Sunday afternoon Ultimate, with a ton of people coming out every week, who didn't think a little rain would make them melt. This was admittedly a teeny bit hypocritical of me, since I've been too busy to play Ultimate most days they play, including Sundays.

At any rate, there's nothing like playing in the cold, rain and wind; your hair as wet as if you'd put your head under a faucet only a minute before, taking off your glasses so that you can see better, your clothes soaked and mud-spattered, your hands numb and stiff and altogether clumsy with the frisbee, your feet stepping at any minute into squelchy mud or splashy water, mallards on the field -- feeling just as "at-home" there as in a river... doesn't sound like the most fun you've ever had? Huh. Maybe I'm not describing it right...

Not a fable, but there is a moral

I forgot to mention this earlier, but when I asked Biola which position I didn't get, they told me it would have been all of them, but it looked like they might have made a mistake. It turned out they did make a mistake. So yesterday I did the screening interview, and the interviewer said now she'd send my application on to the departments I'm applying to. And the moral of the story is, don't complain. You'll feel really silly once you see more of the picture.

Hmm, I could write a fable with this moral if I wanted... that could be fun.

Realist or Romantic?

Obviously this is a quiz I found on Liz's blog. They all are. Except the ones that aren't.

You Are A Realistic Romantic

You are more romantic than 60% of the population.

It's easy for you to get swept away by romance...But you've done a pretty good job keeping perspective. You're still taken in by love poems and sunsetsYou just don't fall for every dreamy pick up line!

Base of the 5th Metatarsil

Today (if it weren't already past midnight...) is the anniversary of the day I broke a bone for the first (and only) time. I haven't played Ultimate Frisbee often enough since then, especially barefoot. Not because I'm scared of breaking something again -- far from it. I've just been busy. Maybe I'll get to play again this Friday. That would be nice. At least I can justify it as exercise, which means it can even be classified under "wedding preparations"! Oooh, maybe it'll rain. I haven't played enough in the rain, either.

I bought $100 worth of fabric for my wedding dress today. A lot of money, but not compared to the prices for a storebought wedding dress. My parents are paying for it anyway, but I still don't want to spend too much. Bargains make me happy. My dress is going to be very pretty, which also makes me happy. It's going to be similar in style to this dress: http://www.katrinamariedesigns.com/WG357.htm.

What Type of Tea Are You?

This seems to be a more accurate quiz than some others. I found it on Rachel's blog.

Green Tea
Green Tea...You are Green Tea!Strong and very smart you prefer peace to violence
and very rarely take action if it involves
confrontation. But you make up for this with
your keen insight and understanding of the
world and people around you, you have a very
mysterious nature. Many people see you as laid
back and that may be true but you are very
intelligent and make good decisions.

Yet Another Liz Quiz

You Are 19 Years Old
19

Under 12: You are a kid at heart. You still have an optimistic life view - and you look at the world with awe.
13-19: You are a teenager at heart. You question authority and are still trying to find your place in this world.
20-29: You are a twentysomething at heart. You feel excited about what's to come... love, work, and new experiences.
30-39: You are a thirtysomething at heart. You've had a taste of success and true love, but you want more!
40+: You are a mature adult. You've been through most of the ups and downs of life already. Now you get to sit back and relax.

What Age Do You Act?

I don't really question authority. I just like candy. Actually, I can't think of any questions to which I gave a very teenagey answer, my younger and older answers just averaged out that way.

Happy Car

I get a car after all! See, the reason the person selling me the car upped the price was that her dad thought she was selling it for too little. He's the one who's going to buy her her new car, so his opinion matters in this process. Anyway, she convinced him to only sell it for $100 more than the original price now, and this is good enough for me. I'm getting a car tomorrow! Aside from a nagging fear that I'm going to crash the car as soon as I buy it, I'm quite happy.

The other thing I found out today is that I'm not getting a job at Biola. I don't know which job it is that I'm not getting there, the note in the mail didn't say. I'll have to call them. Maybe I'm not getting any of the ones I applied for. I really need to start job searching more dilligently.

Oh, since I didn't update in January, I should explain a little bit. I had a job in January -- a temporary staff position at Biola in Interlibrary Loan, doing the same thing I had done as a student worker, just getting paid more. They couldn't get the position approved for longer than January though, so I'm back to looking now.

One More Quiz

Here's another one from Liz's blog.

Earth Sprite
Reserved, quiet, wise and free spiritedYou are a sprite of the Earth: You have a deep
connection with the earth and all its
creatures, preferring plants and animals to
people you are quiet and reserved. You
understand things on a different level and can
often see straight through to a persons true
intentions. You are mysterious to everyone even
those in your family, they may live with you
but that doesn't mean they 'know' the real you.
Being inside the house for long periods of time
can be torture, you crave the outdoors and love
simply escaping up a tree or into the forest
where you can be free. Although you may be
smart you are easy to judge a person because
you fear what they 'may' be going to do. You
are wise in things that most overlook and you
are very creative in many aspects like art,
music, etc... Although try as they may to seek
you, you are a free spirit. Just let them try
to catch and put you in a cage.

Surprise, surprise. The only real question as I was going through this one was: "How are they going to describe an earth sprite?" Well, ok, there was a little bit of doubt that I would come out as an earth sprite. Just not much.

Books

I think I received 19 books for Christmas. That isn't counting whichever books I end up buying with a $15 gift card to Barnes & Noble. So far I've read eight of them.

The first was The Lady and the Lion, which was a very quick read, being a beautiful picture book. Next I read Crown Duel by Sherwood Smith -- previously published as two books, Crown Duel and Court Duel. My sister Sondy gave it to me, and she wrote a review of it -- you can find it through the link I have on the sidebar to her book reviews. Basically I agree with what she said, except that I did find Mel's behavior towards the obvious romantic interest a bit annoying. Sure, the circumstances led to misunderstanding, but she was continually thinking of a negative explanation and then assuming it to be the truth. As one who idealistically tends to assume the positive, I couldn't really understand Mel. But I didn't dislike her -- I wanted her to figure things out for her own good. And the book kept me reading, chapter after chapter, wondering when she would get it. And wondering about... other things. I don't want to give too much away, just let me say this was a delightful, well-told story, made even better by the author taking the time to do the research to understand the obligatory medieval setting of fantasy literature.

Another I've read is Caravan by Dorothy Gilman. There's a review of it on Sondy's page, as well. I wasn't quite as enthusiastic about it as Sondy, thinking it good but not great for most of the book. But then I came to a moment in the end in which I knew the decision of the main character would either make the book a disappointment or take it to the next level. She made the right choice (although with a post-modernistic philosophy which slightly annoyed me), and the book tied together at the end to become quite good. It was also a fairly unpredictable book, or at least would have been if I didn't already know some of the future details through my own fault.

Then there's A College of Magics by Caroline Stevermer. Throughout almost the entire book I had a feeling that certain things and people were not as they seemed and that surprises would be revealed before the end of the book. I had just decided that I was wrong and resigned myself that there was nothing more to the book than what met the eye, when, voila, a surprise! It was not exactly what I had expected, but the author had actually set it up quite well. I highly recommend the book, even though Faris, the main character, did not at all have a personality I could relate to.

Ok, that's enough not-quite-book-reviews for now. I'll torment you with more another day.

Gaaaaaahhhhh!!!!!

Curses upon all who increase the price of the car they're selling by $300 after you've already been talking to them about it for two weeks, you've spent $50 getting the stupid car inspected, and you even have the check written out, ready to hand over!!! Well, ok, not real curses, she's a nice person and I wouldn't really want to hurt her... quite... but gaaaaahhhh!!!!

Not that this has happened to anyone, of course. I'm just speaking in generalities, about all the people in the world who might do that. It's pure coincidence that I happen to be looking for a car right now (or was looking for a car until two weeks ago, and have now started looking again), since sometime last month the cable to my gas pedal broke, and I'm tired of putting money into that car. I was already thinking of getting a new one, actually. It's just more urgent now, since I need to have some way of getting to stores to look at wedding dresses and such. Not to mention buying groceries.

Did I mention I'm ticked?
